Online Training: Comprehensive Technical Programme in General Insurance by National Insurance Academy, Pune (India)

Amid the Global COVID-19 Pandemic challenges, the National Insurance Corporation of Eritrea (NICE) organized a two-week virtual training for a number of its staff members, titled “COMPREHENSIVE TECHNICAL PROGRAMME IN GENERAL INSURANCE” that was provided in collaboration with the National Insurance Academy (NIA), headquartered in Pune (India) via Microsoft teams. Previously, similar training has been annually attended by NICE staff at the NIA Campus. However, due the current pandemic-related travel barriers virtual training was an apt decision.

As part of its Human Resources Development, NICE has been benefiting from various virtual trainings that are being provided to its employees by different institutions, partners and reinsurers in the last few months. The recently organised online training was delivered over the period from 5th to 17th October, 2020 as a part of that objective.

The main aim of the program was building up of regional cooperation through knowledge sharing on the practices prevalent in the different sub-environments which are part of the Global Environment, and facilitate in building up the concepts of common theoretical base that remains true across markets. As a result, the program endeavored to equip the participants with knowledge of:

  • Salient Regulatory Frameworks prevalent across the Region.
  • Principles and practices of general insurance.
  • Main General insurance covers and their applications
  • Underwriting practices
  • Claims Management-Best practices

The course was designed for two weeks, three hours each day covering a range of topics on General Insurance. Ten trainers from the NIA covered twenty-seven sessions in these two weeks, including two test evaluations for participants to assess their knowledge gain. In total, twenty participants attended the training; seventeen being from NICE, one from the Regulatory Authority and two from New Sudan Insurance Company in Juba, South Sudan.

The trainees appreciated and commended the overall program and testified that the contents of the training were relevant to their circumstances which added value to their knowledge in the insurance industry.

The training successfully concluded on 17th October, 2020 with feedback and valedictory session in the presence of the Director of the Academy Mr. G Srinivasan, Chair Professor of the Academy Mr. Segar Sampathkumar, coordinators from both NICE and NIA, as well as the trainees.
